## About these calculators

Running a car costs more than the price on the windscreen. These calculators cover the costs that are set by rules rather than by the dealer: vehicle tax, company car tax, finance and the tax savings on an electric car through salary sacrifice.
For a car first registered from April 2017, vehicle tax is £200 a year from the second year, plus a £440 supplement for 5 years if its list price was over £40,000 (£50,000 for an electric car registered from April 2025). Older cars pay by CO2 band or engine size.
If you drive a company car, the taxable benefit depends on its list price and CO2 emissions, and electric cars are taxed far less, which is why salary sacrifice schemes for them are popular. The car finance calculator compares hire purchase and PCP payments, including a final balloon payment.
