## How to work out VAT

To take 20% VAT off a price, divide it by 1.2. To add 20% VAT, multiply by 1.2.
For the 5% reduced rate, divide or multiply by 1.05 instead. A common mistake is taking 20% off a VAT-inclusive price: on £120 that gives £96, not the correct £100.

## Common questions

### How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply by 1.2. £100 plus VAT at 20% is £120.00.

### How do I take VAT off a price?

Divide by 1.2. A price of £120 including VAT is £100.00 before VAT, so the VAT is £20.00. Taking off 20% of £120 would be wrong.

### What are the UK VAT rates?

20% standard rate, 5% reduced rate (for example household gas) and 0% zero rate (for example most food and children’s clothes). Household electricity in Great Britain is temporarily zero-rated from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027; in Northern Ireland it stays at 5%.
